I looked at a number of different trail shoes but decided on this one from Montrail. Their shoes fit me well in the past so it felt like less of a chance ordering this one without trying it on first. The shoes fit great. My first test run was an 18-mile trail run. I had zero issues.Having passed that test, I used them for this year's Leadville 100 trail run. The only issue I had was a small hot spot on my pinky toe at mile 40. A little duct tape prevented that from becoming a blister. These shoes really gave me confidence on the downhills. No one passed me while I descended from Hope Pass to Twin Lakes -- not bad for a Detroit guy, but much credit goes to the shoes. They really hooked up and felt stable.I was initially concerned that the rock guard did not cover the heel, but that was not a problem.Overall, I can recommend them for easy, short trail runs as well as 100-milers through the Rocky's.

I usually run in NB 1226 because I need the extra cushioning. Now I run a little over 20 miles per week on gravel roads and my feet were killing me from stepping on the pointed and uneven rocks. These Montrail shoes are surprisingly light weight, much less than the NB, but do a great job protecting your feet from all the sharp edges. The rock shield works like a champ, but is still flexible and does not make the shoe overly rigid. I would never run in them on hard surgfaces like asphalt or concrete because they lack the cushioning of the NB, but for sharp or uneven surfaces they are awesome.

I just started running consistently this last year, so I don't have a lot of experience with running shoes. I do have an indoor pair of Nike Frees which I like, but for outdoors, I use the Montrail Rockridge trail shoes. In my opinion, the Rockridge trail shoes are more comfortable than the Nike Frees, but they are slightly heavier and the bottom has rubber, which makes the Rockridge shoes harder. However, the whole reason I bought these is because outdoor terrain is less forgiving than an indoor/outdoor track. These shoes feel comfortable on grass, gravel, and anything not paved/cemented. When I run on cement they feel a little stiff, but I prefer to run on the earth next to the sidewalk. These shoes are designed for trails, and from what I can tell, they hold up well. I would recommend these shoes to anyone who is looking for an outdoor trail running shoe. I gave a 5-star review because they are excellent for what they are designed for. I would not buy these for running on cement/pavement, but like I said, they are designed as trail shoes.I'm a size 10 and ordered a size 10 which fit great. I usually don't order shoes online because I don't know how they will fit. But this really worked out. I can't wear shoes that have a high arch. Thankfully, these do not.
